We started with a couple of news items: first, the co-founder of Rap Genius did something not-so-genius: he said the killer in Santa Barbara, CA had an excellent writing style, and of course left his company shortly thereafter. Lesson: don’t extol the virtues of mass killers on social media.
Also, Dennis Edwards connected with David Deutsch on LinkedIn; David asked if they had previously met (Mr. Edwards lives in Kansas City, MO) and Dennis said no, and added that he was a big fan of this show. He even recommended David on LinkedIn for the show! Very exciting.
Then we launched right into an in-depth talk about how bands can, and should, use social media. Prof. Philp spoke at length about various things he teaches in his classes (i.e. helping students use social media effectively for their bands). Then he mentioned the importance of making sure the content shared across various social media platforms is appropriate and respects each tools’ unique culture. We also talked about using the right social tools for where your audience is, including unlikely tools like Meetup to connect with others.
Finally we discussed how Philp is the co-founder of YouChoose Music which helps raise funds for CUMAC, Northern New Jersey’s most pivotal food bank. He hosts live events where music fans make donations to hear specific songs, etc. Great idea!
The Tip of the Week: make sure your content is emotional and not factual. Bands, for instance, can talk about their personal hardships which will make people more likely to know and trust (and ultimately listen to them) instead of only posting their music videos, etc.
It was a great episode, rich with content and useful ideas.
20+ years experience in the entertainment world working for PolyGram Records, the Universal Music Group, New Video (home video distributor of the A&E Network, History Channel & Biography Channel content), The Edge With Jake Sasseville (independent television show), and Greater Media Broadcasting (WDHA & WMTR radio). He is currently the music coordinator at the Wayne United Methodist Church and Chief Organizer Guy of YouChoose Music, a live music events company that raises oodles of big dollars for great non-profits. He has one wife and two children.
Thanks again, Dave!!!
