Welcome to Episode 78 of Social Media Unscrambled! Where a couple of weirdos, Chris Curran and David Deutsch, attempt (and oftentimes fail) at making social media accessible to individuals and professionals who are a little intimidated by using social media.

We learned from the old maintenance guy Barry that, to start a podcast, you’re “gonna need a couple of horses, a couple of mules.” Just so you know.

Chris Curran started it off by talking about how Apple has dominated podcasting so far. But now Google will get with the times and include podcasts in the Google Play Music app (soon). A HUGE development in podcasting for sure!

Chris then mentioned another podcast he co-hosts called The Profit First Podcast with Mike Michalowicz. Chris went to promote an episode of that show and found that the guest had blocked him on Twitter! (Turns out, by mistake)! Chris had never been blocked online before. Fortunately Gabrielle Fontaine (the guest) unblocked him, because this really hurt Chris’ feelings. In the email exchange between Mike, Chris and Gabrielle we found out that Chris is, in fact, a Russian porn star.

Also, Chris talks about how Twitter rolled out a new feature which allows you to poll your audience. Chris posted a poll about how they feel about auto direct messages. 4 out of 4 respondents — 190% of them, according to Barry — said they hate auto-DMs. It’s a cool feature to try; look for the “pie chart’ icon when you’re composing a tweet.

David then talked about a fundamental but very important question he often gets: Which social media platform is right for me and my business? The answer is, in a nutshell – it depends on where your audience is. And, crucially, when you are there you can’t just sell but instead give to them. Although this might be counterintuitive it is important that you spend your time on social media offering something to your audience rather than getting something from them. So ask your audience what they want: more money, better job, but mostly they want to eat. So feed them free food and they will come!

Chris then talked about his experience with Yelp after moving. He recently moved to Colorado from exotic New Jersey and went to change his business address on Yelp. Yelp however would not approve the change because (they said) the new address had to be put somewhere else online or they wouldn’t believe it. To fix the problem, Chris had to change the address on his website which allowed them to fix the address issue. While a little annoying it does make some sense – after all, not everybody is as nice and honest as Chris, and oftentimes they will use little tricks to try to scam people.

Chris then shared a difficulty he has with social media: Too many accounts with not enough time to use all of them, coupled with having “content out the wazoo,” as he says. To manage this, Chris uses the Buffer app, which schedules your Tweets in advance. So he dedicates 30-60 minutes every Tuesday morning to schedule his social media content to publish automatically over the next week. It’s a great time-saving tool which takes a lot of his stress away from sharing so much content. The key: Don’t be spammy. Spammy is basically repeating the same content 7x/day and overly self-promotional.

David then talked about Streak, a gmail CRM integration (customer relationship management helps keep track of your sales pipeline.) It also helps schedule emails and see if someone viewed your email. David would also love to see a CRM integration with LinkedIn, which doesn’t seem likely in the near future. David also talked about how the hacker group Anonymous outed several people on Twitter as members of the KKK. Follow #opkkk for more information.

Anyhoo, Chris discussed an event at an event at a local Colorado Springs radio station (KCMJ) and how a woman named JL delivered a presentation. JL did a live Periscope broadcast to connect with her fans before her in-person presentation. It served as a hello and a commercial of sorts for her fan base, allowing them to hear directly from her on location.

David brought up how his friend, Brian, believes that Twitter is useless. One of the greatest ways to use Twitter is using hashtags at conferences and association meetings. This allows people to have open conversations using these hashtags, which allows for a potentially huge global conversation about all kinds of topics. Chris added that people can have their own micro-conversations with their own audiences, too. Chris brought up the issue of Facebook hashtags. Are they useful? Chris doesn’t even know how to search hashtags on Facebook. David says he doesn’t know anyone who uses it effectively; it’s mostly used ironically.

Then Chris discussed LastPass, a way to share passwords securely with others without actually giving away your passwords. Primarily though, it’s a great way to keep all your own usernames and passwords in one safe place. After you allow LastPass to remember your username and password for a particular website, in the future when you log in LastPass will fill in your username and password for you. If you have lots of accounts everywhere this is a great tool.

Chris also mentioned that he’s a member of many Facebook groups and was concerned about how to keep up-to-date with all of them. Good Facebook groups can keep people in touch with each other and foster important, fun conversations. Chris belongs to ABBO (accountants, bookkeepers and business owners) and Voice-Over Camp. He wasn’t sure how to stay in touch with the group. David suggested Chris turns on alerts for those groups which will keep him up-to-date of the discussions happening there. When he gets an alert, he can quickly scan the message and comment if he wants to, and ignore the conversations he doesn’t want to participate in.

Finally, a letter to the Social Media Therapists:

Dear Cathartic Chris and Doctor David,

The other day I was on LinkedIn and got a marriage proposal from a person in Russia. They are quite attractive and claim they have a lot of money in a Nigerian bank account, which I could also access, but only if I became a co-depositor on the account and put $5,000 into it first.

What should I do?

First, our news of the week: Nature Valley Granola Bars was hijacked by Anime fans on Twitter. Apparently someone made a comment on their page and someone from the company replied, giving them Anime street cred. Suddenly their entire feed was inundated with Anime fan art and references. Chris asked if this was good; David replied that it is good as long as it doesn’t become tribal resulting in shunning so-called outsiders.

The episode quickly became an excellent exercise in how to effectively use social media. Doc rightly, and intuitively, said that although he doesn’t really use social media (except Facebook) that you should use it as a forum to connect and talk to people while only giving small tidbits every so often about what you are up to. That, in David’s opinion, is at the heart of an excellent social media strategy.

David then explained to Doc the basics of Twitter being a microblog and how powerful they can be. David and Chris then explained how we were engaging in real conversations with Twitter #Hashtags which we also explained to him (and you.)

Chris then asked Doc why he doesn’t have a cell phone. In a nutshell Doc doesn’t want to add another expense, nor does he want another addiction. Good thinking Doc.

Later we circled back to discussing how to effectively use social media by almost never talking about yourself but instead giving on social. The Tip of the Week tied directly into that, saying that we should instead of just talking about ourselves we should use social media to search for topics we are interested in, answer questions, ask them ourselves and follow what others are saying. That will improve your social media effectiveness tremendously.

Most people who meet me after hearing one of my shows will be surprised to find me to be a quiet kind of person. I really don’t talk much. I’m certainly not a highly social creature or a snappy dresser. I tend not to stand out in a crowd at all. I enjoy watching other people go about their day. I don’t smoke or drink (anymore). It’s very important to me to be as kind to others as possible, no matter what their status is in life. I try very hard to see the other person’s point of view.

Although I don’t belong to any one religion, I believe very much in a supreme being. I think our earth is a kind of school for becoming good hearted souls. I can’t imagine how people don’t see all the proof of God’s existence right before their eyes.

I have always loved playing records for people. I got my first record player at the age of three. I’m very awkward, sloppy, and always in total disarray. I love to work at hard jobs with good people. I started doing radio at WVOT in Wilson, NC back in early 1981. I was also a DJ at the Hackettstown-based college radio station, WNTI. And WRNJ also in Hackettstown.

I owe these stations a lot for the experience they gave me, but I’m much happier running my own operation. It just works better for me. Folks can find me being the DJ at all kinds of events in North Jersey. I see I’m using way too many “I”‘s in this self description of me. I think I’d better stop. Anyone who listens to my station will get their own pretty good description of me after a show or two.

Our episode began with our weekly news item, which was how the NYPD completely botched their use of a hashtag to get New York City residents engaged with local police officers. It predictably blew up in their collective faces, humiliating the NYPD with images of officer beating Occupy Wall Street protesters and random acts of violence perpetrated by the force.

Ric wisely noted that they could have taken that opportunity to engage with their citizens, made fun of themselves a little and taken other steps to mitigate the damage. However it seems that they are just not that social media savvy in the department so they wasted yet another opportunity to help themselves.

Later Ric described the five key elements to social media success, which are also on his DragonSearch website:

  • Brand Maintenance: Brand maintenance in social media means that the organization has all of the typical social media accounts and is posting and responding to mentions of their name. An organization that is fundamentally using social for customer service is using the brand maintenance approach.
  • Community: Community can be about building or nurturing community of all types, including brand ambassadors, people who love your brand, or people who share your passion points. You can be at the center or the periphery of a community, and be a passive or active member.
  • Influencer: The influencer approach is about identifying relevant influencers, closely monitoring their social media activities, and engaging with them as appropriate. It can be about building relationships, too, much in the same way that traditional PR was often based on building relationships with media.
  • Thought Leadership/Reputation: Thought leadership includes proactive and reactive reputation management work in which you are endeavoring to place the brand favorably as having credibility or expertise in your arena. Content marketing typically falls into this bucket.
  • Big Splash: Big Splash approaches are creative programs that are usually intended to get a lot of attention. These include contests, sweepstakes, and viral videos.  While these tactics don’t usually help to foster community or influence, they can be great for awareness and the creation of connections.

Finally we wrapped up with the Tip of the Week which involved aiming for the head, not the heart, when using social media. Most people don’t buy from what they know, but rather what they feel. To this point Ric indicated that no Red Bull ads feature how horrible their product tastes, but rather their ads surround the feelings they are trying to evoke around Red Bull.

Instagram Insights with Jenn Herman – Ep.10

It is no longer surprising to anyone that photos are being shared with friends and strangers all over the world, all through the miraculous technology that is the internet. Smartphones and cameras enable their owners to take pictures and instantly post them on various webpages. With this interactivity, and just a little bit of narcissism, you can channel these photographic skills into a social media marketing technique that will be fresh and unique – unlike anything you’ve done before.

The premier photo sharing website to date is Instagram. It allows users to upload their photography with searchable hashtags, filters to make the photography look professional, and even Cinema, a camera stabilization feature. It has recently developed into a video sharing site as well, allowing users to loop twelve second videos.

Instagram, to the average businessperson, sounds like a “cute idea,” or a nice way for people to display their hobby. But used correctly, as Jenn Herman (http://jennstrends.wordpress.com/) explained on this week’s Social Media Unscrambled, it can be an innovative way to share your product and ideas.

Jenn originally thought that Instagram was kind of a waste of time. She could take and publish her own photography – she was already an avid photographer. She didn’t need to see everyone’s picture of their latest outfit or favorite recipe. But when she became more deeply involved in social media marketing, and started a blog to help others understand social media trends, applications, and benefits, she realized how much Instagram had to offer to her and her readers. She created her own Instagram handle – jennherman31.

When Jenn works with clients, her purpose is to enable them to use social media – correctly. While most business people know that social media is the way to go, they don’t realize the best procedure, policies, and platforms for them. For a while, Instagram fit into a category of seldom used social media practices. However, she now advocates the fun and creative outlet.

Instagram is a photo sharing version of Twitter; a user can constantly post their pictures in real time. Both smartphone owners and digital camera users have the opportunity to upload and edit photography. The feed containing the instant photographs is updated constantly for fresh content. While posting, the photographer can also use a hashtag to label the picture, in order for people to find, like, and share the photograph even after the feed has extended past that time period.

Instagram is comparable with a tweet or Facebook text post in many ways; it shares a concise message of an idea or product that can create conversation and interaction. However, it is also very different; Instagram is meant to be fun. It is meant to be creative in a different way from text posts, even ones with catchy slogans and puns. Pictures, such as those published through Instagram, change the type of interaction that a business can have with its consumers, and enables a more behind-the-scenes look. Clients enjoy an exclusivity factor that a picture can provide – an update on a product, a window into the factory or studio, and an insight to who the producers truly are. Instagram, put simply, is a fun and different way to share content that will make clients feel that they have an extra place.

Instagram is similar to and can be connected with other social media features, especially Facebook. Similar to Facebook, you can find users and photography by searching, or in this case, using the “explore” button. However, Instagram does not have EdgeRank (a fancy Facebook algorithm), so it allows literally anything to come up in the feed, and even allows for more visibility than Facebook posts.

To clarify, Facebook’s EdgeRank determines whether or not certain posts come up in a user’s feed. When a fan interacts with your page, it gives your page a higher ranking to them. The algorithm determines which of your posts to display to them based on when they are online, their other preferences, and many other factors. This can be frustrating to page moderators, since some fans will not see the content.

Jenn gave some great advice on helping your Facebook page get more views and avoid the pitfalls of EdgeRank. Facebook wants you to stay on their site, so links to external pictures, blog posts, and websites will be featured less than simple text posts. However, if you put a link to a blog post or picture, and then later post a link back to that Facebook post, it will enable more viewers to see the post. Additionally, because Instagram is owned by Facebook, Facebook’s EdgeRank will publish Instagram photo links more prominently than links to photos on other photo viewing platforms.

With Instagram, Jenn has informed us that you can allow your customers to see the real you, behind your product or business. It’s a great way to engage, no matter what you are selling. However, make sure to use it appropriately and correctly – yes, Anthony Weiner, we’re looking at you! No more sexting with photos through Twitter.

David recommends using bitly.com in order to shorten your links. This not only leaves more room for content in your social media post, but also tracks the amount of people who click the link. This will allow you to determine what type of post is best for your viewers, as well as the social media platforms where your posts receive the most attention. Google, too, has a link shortener, but it does not track the clicks.

Social Media Productivity with Erik J. Fisher – Ep.5

On this week’s Social Media Unscrambled, the show hosts got a visit from a “cousin;” another podcaster in the world of social media. “Beyond the To-Do List” host Erik J. Fisher (@erikjfisher), a source of social media and entrepreneurial knowledge, was welcomed onto the show with open arms by Chris Curran of Fractal Recording and David Deutsch of Synergi Social. (once Chris figured out that pesky Skype issue.. 😉

Erik J. Fisher You know you’ve made it on the internet when your podcast is listed in the top 20-50 in its category in iTunes. Erik’s show focuses on personal productivity perspective, which, in short, is understanding what a person can do to be productive and effective in their own way. In his entertaining half hour with Chris and Dave on #smUnscrambled, Erik shared some of his social media knowledge, what platforms he uses, how he defines productivity, and one of his most compelling interview guests . Thankfully Erik also shared what his typical social media day and week are like. And did you know he’s the social media correspondent for The Podcast Answer Man 😉

The show started out lively and friendly as usual, as the hosts discussed a missing red panda (and the zoo’s use of social media to find it!) before introducing their guest. Erik used some of his time as well as examples to demonstrate that without a proper idea and goal for one’s social media activities, it can be a huge waste of time. For a small business owner, social media can get in the way of clients and sales, instead of acting as a way to drive revenue.

The question to ask yourself: Is your social media a distraction for you, or a driving force? Productivity, to Erik, is doing the right things at the right time, not only doing many things in a timely manner. As he stated, what’s the point of being productive if you’re not doing the right things – the things that actually help your business? Social media, as the hosts realized, can either be a time suck, or it can do miraculous things such as clinch a deal or find a red panda – just as long as objectives and timing are planned to maximize usefulness.
BeyondTheToDoListErik mentioned his most influential podcast guest- the author of Getting Things Done, David Allen. He emphasized that in order to be successful, one must identify and utilize a trusted system, which usually requires planning, practice and tweaking. A system for social media interaction is unique to everyone, definitely not one-size-fits-all. The most important thing to do is to be you.

The show went on to discuss the new usage of the hashtag on Facebook, and what exactly a hashtag is. A hashtag, according to Erik and David, adds meta-data and media to a post, can make a point, and makes it easy to find stories, articles, ads, and people. The hashtag, contrary to common belief, is not owned by twitter, and is now being used all over the internet.

The most unique part of SMU is the host’s ability to interact with their listeners. As the talk about the hashtag occurred, two listeners posted comments, one about helpful tips on how to use hashtags, and the other to emphasize the point that hashtags make it easier to connect on Facebook without ads. And EdgeRank got a mention too; EdgeRank is a kind of Search Engine Optimization within Facebook itself, which determines how many people actually see your posts.

The soundest piece of advice that was given on the show was to just be yourself. Using your time management, unique skills, and resources is the best way to get attention and create business. Businesses can learn a lot from other people, as David Deutsch told the story of a listener who found a typo on his SynergiSocial.com website, and instead of becoming defensive, etc, David cultivated a beneficial relationship with this person. (FYI- This listener can be found at www.karmabridge.com providing acupuncture and herbals….and fyi David DID fix the typo 😉 Using skills and personality allows a businessperson to make friends with their clients efficiently and naturally.

Blog Amplification with Triberr.com founder Dino Dogan – Ep.4

Without the listening community, Social Media Unscrambled, much like other social networking platforms, would be nothing. While it has been coined the “single best 30 minute chunk of time you can invest in your social media effectiveness,” without anyone to hear the catchy slogan, what point would there be? The motor behind all social media is the amount of eyes viewing it, as the effective social media user understands.

While hosts Chris and David have created something innovative with #smUnscrambled as a way for listeners to understand effective social media use, they still seek to expand their reach. They are looking towards developed entrepreneurs and advancers of the industry. The hosts were therefore proud to welcome Dino Dogan, whose site triberr.com is a recent yet massively influential development in the blogosphere.

DinoOne of Dino’s original blogs, diyblogger.net, (which is still going strong!) is a jewel of information on marketing, media and content. Dino got the idea for Triberr when he was trying to market his own blog. He had people who were helping him get his content out, and he was helping them, it was complicated and confusing – he decided there had to be a better way. But there wasn’t. So he made it.

But what exactly is Triberr? How can an average, everyday blogger use it to do what social media is supposed to do – to expand reach? The first thing to ask; are you a blogger or not?

If you’re not a blogger, Triberr is a site that allows you to read (and share) many blogs on similar topics of interest, all found conveniently grouped.

For bloggers, Triberr is a social network in itself; a way to interact and create traffic and attention to their posts. Triberr allows bloggers to form groups, called “tribes,” of blogs in the same genre. A tribal chief, who can be anyone using the site, can create a tribe based on a topic, and then allow users to join the tribe. The blogger can then interact with people who write and post similar content, and will expand their outreach and help keep eyes on their site. Triberr, in short, is blog amplification.

In Dino’s opinion, blogs started back with the stone ages, when people made cave paintings on the walls. It was a way for early humans to express themselves, and that desire has not ceased. Triberr simply makes it easier for a person’s form of expression to be reachable. Based on the type of tribe a person has joined and which posts they “approve,” triberr takes care of publishing the post to gain maximum reach.

TriberrIt is not only the number of readers that Triberr helps the blogger increase; it is the quality of the reader. Too many social media users focus on their number of followers, when they should be writing for a specific type of reader. Triberr allows a user to be published to people who truly care about what they’re reading – community members of the same type of thought.

And what is next for triberr.com? Soon it will allow companies to recruit bloggers and tribes into their marketing campaigns, which, for bloggers, is a far better way to monetize their blog content than traditional ads.

Increased Twitter Engagement with Dorien Morin-van Dam – Ep.2

Are you tweeting, or are you merely chirping? What are the best ways to attract Twitter followers, make your Twitter useful, and manage your feed?

In this week’s episode of Social Media Unscrambled, hosts Chris Curran and David Deutsch are joined by the intelligent and talented Dorien Morin-van Dam to discover some tips for using the microblogging platform Twitter, including Lists, Hashtags and more.

One of Dorien’s recent popular posts is called “11 S(t)weet Tips for Increased Twitter Engagement,” and focuses on the aspect of interacting with followers. This knowledge attracted the team of Chris Curran of Fractal Recording and David Deutsch of Synergi Social to invite Dorien to Skype into their podcast, Social Media Unscrambled, which airs weekly on The Fractal Stream internet radio station on Tuesday afternoons at 1:30PM EST. Social Media Unscrambled takes Curran’s broadcasting knowledge and Deutsch’s profession of social media in order to create an interactive experience for listeners who are interested in utilizing social media in the most efficient way possible.

In the previous episode, Chris and David spoke about the benefits of Google+ and sited various social networking bloggers. In this episode, they were able to host Dorien Morin van-Dam, who brought a different voice and feel to the show, in addition to her knowledge.

Dorien Morin van-Dam is a social networking consultant who uses her own experience in order to assist friends, clients, and businesses in proper and efficient social media strategies. Since 2010, she has been the founder and moderator of MoreInMedia.com, in which she blogs and creates workshops involving social media. She focuses primarily on twitter and LinkedIn, since they are the two most commonly misused and misunderstood platforms.

Dorien currently lives and works in South Carolina, and when she started speaking on the show, the hosts were surprised to hear no Southern accent. She related her roots from the Netherlands and her move to Boston, where she met her husband and lost her accent. After the friendly jabber that makes their show enjoyable and unique, David, Chris, and Dorien started talking about the first of the eleven tips on Dorien’s twitter post.

The first tip reads, “Twitter announced an update to their lists –>You can now make up to 1,000 lists (up from 20), and each list can include up to 5,000 accounts (up from 500). Can we say ‘wow’?! If you are NOT using lists yet, get to it. We use Twitter lists for curation purposes and improved interaction!” Dorien and David focused on explaining the useful aspect of twitter list. A twitter list allows the user to group the twitters they follow into certain categories, and then when they wish to find a post or idea, they are easily able to track who it might come from, rather than scrolling through an entire feed with thousands of tweets. Business owners and those who choose to connect using social media have a tendency to have many followers and follow many others, and scrolling through an entire list of tweets can be daunting and time consuming. Users can place bloggers on many lists, and due to the new update on Twitter, lists can be even more utilized.

A few listeners wanted to know how lists were made and if they were truly manageable. Lists are made manually by the user, and are as manageable as the creator allows them to be. Lists can be either public or private, and therefore can be utilized by other twitter bloggers. Dorien explained that the most useful feature of lists is to see what is popular and being talked about by various groups.

After a lengthy discussion, the hosts move on to the second point on Dorien’s list, which is, in short, politeness on twitter. “Thank those who tweet out your content, whether it’s a re-tweet or your blog posts. Acknowledgment can lead to great conversations and those can lead to meaningful connections.” Showing a follower that you appreciate them can start a lasting relationship which will make great business connections and partnerships in the future. And it’s as easy as typing “thank you,” or an original variation of that.

The third bullet that was discussed on the show had to do with the hashtag. The hosts explained what a hashtag was and its usefulness for the twitter user. “Twitter chats are a fun way to make new connections on Twitter. A chat happens when a group of people tweet about the same topic using a hashtag (#). The chats are at a specific predetermined time and often repeat weekly (or bi-weekly).” While a hashtag can be very useful, the hosts of #smUnscrambled did not have enough time in the half hour show to expand upon it.

The show is growing, after only two episodes, in a way that exceeds the boundaries of a half hour, and the limits of any one social media topic. As the show draws to a close, Chris and David mention their plans for the founder of Triberr to speak in person on the show in a couple weeks, as well as their excitement for its future. They thank Dorien for speaking about her post and for sharing her useful social media knowledge – even if it was only 3 of her 11 useful tips. The only thing left to do is to go tweet about it!

beta test show: Content Curation, Yahoo/Tumblr – Ep.0

There’s an easy way to stay in the know and up to date on the changing face of internet interactions. It is called Social Media Unscrambled (@smUnscrambled) – and unscramble is what it is setting out to do.

This talk show podcast, broadcast live on The Fractal Stream by Chris Curran and David Deutsch, will be a half-hour long, interactive show focusing on social media tips, top trends, big shots, and news. Chris Curran’s technological recording expertise from his studio, Fractal Recording, pairs with David Deutsch’s media-based background at Synergi Social, to which clients come if they are “terrified of Twitter, frightened of Facebook, or lost on LinkedIn.” The two complement each other as they chat and joke about the topics in a very “improv” style.

In the show’s test run on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, Chris and David covered a variety of topics, ranging from SEO (Search engine optimization), to Triberr, a site where bloggers can join “tribes” of writers who write about similar topics. They also covered news.me, which connects Facebook and Twitter accounts to allow the user to see what content their followers are sharing, and briefly discussed the importance of LinkedIn, the professional connection site, and Tumblr, a blog site, popular for teenagers, which has recently been purchased by Yahoo!

A goal of the show is to be implemented on other social media sties, especially Twitter, as listeners will be instructed to use #smUnscrambled as they listen and post ideas and questions. Special guests will be given an opportunity to share their knowledge and even promote their businesses, as Curran and Deutsch moderate and utilize their own skills.

Although the show was only a half hour beta test, it showed promise and initiative. In the half hour, the hosts ran out of time to talk about their planned topics, and therefore planned for the next show, giving the listeners something to come back for. As the show improves, it will also start to use the social media tips that it mentioned and the listeners commented on– perhaps leaving the listener with a question and an insight, and the motivation to come back for more.
