First our news item: www.tsu.co is a new social network that actually offers to pay users. So rather than just making money just in ads, or offering a free network like Ello, tsu promises to pay you for using it. Very interesting model.

So then we went right into talking with Mandy, an excellent and well-informed guest. First we went through our weekly Three and a Half Tips:

  1. Always respond.
  2. Always test ads to see what works
  3. Have a professional appearance across platforms

3-1/2th tip: The worst thing a business can do on social media is ____________________. (fill in the blank)  #unscrambled

Some answers to this fill-in-the-blank from our listeners included:

  • Setting up an account and doing nothing
  • Being a jerk / posting provocative comments
  • Ignoring conversations
  • Deleting criticism
  • Unknowingly promoting competitors

We discussed all three, and the third one about professional appearance launched into a conversation and David sharing the most epic LinkedIn profile he’s ever seen. Here it is!

We also talked about social media advertisements. In a nutshell, while people complain about paying for social media ads on Facebook etc., the comparative cost / benefit of a Facebook ad vs. an ad on TV or in the newspaper can’t even be calculated. Social ads help you target your exact audience and it tells you how many people see it. You just can’t get those kinds of results with traditional advertising.

Mandy shared exactly how narrowly you can target people on Facebook and Twitter. Listen to the episode for the astonishing truth.

Finally David ended with our business growth tip-of-the-week: when networking in the real world, make sure you pin down a follow-up meeting with the person on the spot. Include their name, company, and choose a location and take down their phone number as well. That way your follow-up is done and you can continue networking.

First our news item: most people know about how the iPhone6 is allegedly bending in people’s pockets. Now reports are coming out that they are also sticking to people’s hair and beards, prompting the #HairGate hashtag, as if it is some sort of scandal on par with Nixon’s illegal break-ins and his subsequent resignation from the Presidency.

Then we went right into speaking with Mandy who gave lots of tips on how to blog effectively for your business. In fact she took us straight into our new segment: 3-1/2 tips for busy entrepreneurs!

Tip #1: Get organized: content calendars are key! We LOVE Google Docs. I have been using Google Docs religiously since day 1 of starting my business years ago.  Create content schedules so you aren’t stressed about creating last minute content b/c you forgot the night before! Do your research ahead of time. Of course improvising is great so if there is news you want to blog about last minute or post on social, awesome – but  you can’t base your content strategy off breaking news stories, unless of course you are the Huffington Post!

Tip #2: Plan ahead: this goes along with #1 if you have content calendars you can plan ahead. Schedule blog posts ahead of time. Schedule tweets, FB posts, linkedin posts , all social media posts ahead of time. We also post spontaneously but always make sure we have daily posts going out that are scheduled. You can use tools or you can use the platforms like WordPress, FB and Twitter ads to schedule posts ahead of time.

Tip #3: Use tools: This goes with #2 and #1 –  Take advantage of content management tools like hootsuite, manageflitter, wordpress, raven tools, sprout social – the list goes on and on!

And the 1/2 tip: I find auto-direct messaging on Twitter to be _________.

Many audience members filled in the blank on Twitter and the consensus can be summarized by saying auto-direct messaging on Twitter are annoying, unfriendly and not cool. Although Mandy did mention that in some RARE creative cases they could be useful.

In terms of sharing blog content, Mandy suggested the best time to share is Monday through Thursday before 3PM EST is the best, and that you should post to multiple accounts several times. She even suggested that you post the same blog three times on the first day with different descriptions, and then the rest of the week.

A question from Twitter asked: how does she come up with content? Ideally the clients come up with content (and a schedule) but sometimes they will create content for companies who are too busy to do so for themselves. When this happens she will create content that is in line with Google’s keywords to maximize SEO for search.

Mandy also said advertising on Facebook is very powerful because you can micro-target exactly who you want to view your content. However you have to offer something to your audience on your social ads because if you don’t you will be ignored.

Finally we are altering our Tip of the Week and first asked Mandy on how to set up a Twitter profile. She suggested you add in links to your best online presence.

David also provided a tip of the week which is non-social media related, at least directly: he said you should network at least once per week to make real relationships with real people and then convert them to online contacts.
