First we started with our news item: SnapChat is partnering with Square to launch SnapCash, a quick way to send money to others. VentureBeat says

Snapcash is initially only available to Snapchat users 18 years and up in the U.S., though it will presumably expand to other countries later. The only other requirement you need to fulfill is having a Visa or MasterCard debit card. After you enter your debit card number into Snapchat, the company says it is securely stored by Square, which handles the actual payment processing.

This is an interesting development. We’ll see where it goes.

On this episode, our discussion addressed two main broad topics: 1. What exactly is social listening and what does it encompass, and 2. How can small business use it to grow.

Evan spoke at length about the need for businesses to use social media listening tools to monitor their reputation through sentiment analysis, research competitors, conduct market research and dive deep into data about current and potential customers. Using proactive social listening doesn’t have to be very time-consuming or expensive: while some tools cost $50,000 a year and aren’t necessarily very good, Mention.com is a great way to inexpensively monitor your reputation by setting alerts etc. While this does not have as deep data like Radian6, but it does offer fairly robust information at a low price point. (Or you can just hire Evan’s company.)

We also discussed the future of the show. Basically for the rest of the year we will not be hosting live shows, but focusing on rebranding and relaunching our show. This will involve a series of brainstorming sessions with various professionals which we will share with you as podcasts and relaunch the show next year. We will still have the same philosophy of laughing and learning but in a much-needed rethink of how to take us to the next level.

See you LIVE in 2015!

Thanks again, Evan!

First we talked about our social media news item: an attractive 17 year old Belgian girl was photographed at the World Cup. The picture quickly went viral and L’Oreal gave her a modeling contract. Shortly thereafter they found a picture of her hunting a gazelle on her Facebook page at which point L’Oreal determined that her contract was up. In less than 48 hours a girl went from international model to nothing over an errant Facebook posting. Evan said that it is silly that people’s jobs are at stake because of Facebook postings, which is probably right.

We then began discussing how crowdfunding works. Basically crowdfunding is, in Evan’s words, ‘the opposite of traditional business.’ Usually a company creates a product or service and then goes to market to try to sell them. Crowdfunding makes it possible to sell your product and raise the necessary capital BEFORE actually producing anything. Evan said that, like most business efforts, it takes time and planning to successfully launch a crowdfunding campaign. Jumping right into a campaign for yourself because it’s the latest craze is setting yourself up for quick failure. It also requires a budget to engage in all kinds of additional supporting marketing for a campaign.

Additionally businesses have to be ready for the enormous amount of work that will come their way when their crowdfunding campaign is successful, including final planning, production, delivery, customer service, and much more. After all, you want to be sure you can deliver on your promise to each and every member of the “crowd” that has supported you and your campaign.

Also mentioned was The Coolest – a current Kickstarter campaign.

And here’s the book Evan mentioned and recommended:

Chris Curran's work of art, definitely not a selfie

Chris Curran’s work of art, definitely not a selfie

And probably most importantly, we’d like your opinion about the picture on the right which was taken by Chris himself holding his own phone. Chris claims this is and was planned to be a “work of art,” not a selfie.

So— do you consider this a selfie?

Maybe someday our very own David Deutsch will be courageous enough to take his first selfie and share it with our loyal and gracious Social Media Unscrambled fans 😉
