First we talked about our news item: the sad passing of Tom Magliozzi, co-host of Car Talk on NPR. Car Talk is one of the best radio programs on NPR (and probably off NPR too) and served as a major inspiration for Social Media Unscrambled. We were heartbroken to learn of Tom’s passing and send our condolences to Ray and the entire Magliozzi family.

Our guest Lori Cheek, founder and CEO of CHEEKD, allows singles to engage in conversations offline and then connect online to a profile with the hope that they will like what they see and then take the relationship offline again.

Lori came up with the idea for CHEEKD when she went out to dinner with a colleague who slipped a note to someone else on their way out the door. This single experience launched her entire company which she has worked on for five years now and simply won’t give up out of sheer stubbornness.

Lori also made an appearance on the popular show Shark Tank and discussed that experience as well. When she applied to appear on Shark Tank, out of 40,000 submissions she was selected as one out of 150 to fly to LA and appear. And there is only a 50/50 chance her episode would appear on the air (which it did) and Kevin O’Leary hated the idea.

She then pivoted from physical cards to a smartphone app which operates by Bluetooth instead of WiFi so people on the subway can connect even if they don’t have an Internet connection.

Then we reviewed her 3 1/2 tips for busy entrepreneurs:

  1. Schedule everything
  2. Put on blinders, shut off the world and get where you are most productive
  3. Embrace your mistakes — make them quickly, don’t do them again

(3-1/2th tip)  The best way to deal with a flooded inbox is _________. (fill in the blank)

David thinks the best way is to take a nap. Peter Borbas chimed in from Twitter who said: “Realize that you can never answer them all. Delete anything that you choose not to deal with or has no benefit to you!”

Finally David chimed in with his business networking advice: When meeting with someone, always follow-up and offer to give something first. If you give first you will always be top of mind for them and they may (or may not) offer to help in return.

Thanks again, Lori!!!
